MILF Insurgency Hotting Up in the Philippines

A Muslim insurgency in Mindanao in the Philippines have been hotting up very much in the past week. I was under the impression that there was a cease-fire ongoing.

The MILF is a large and powerful army of Muslim separatists in Mindanao. They are well-armed and well-funded and have lots of support. Fighting in the past week left 32 dead. 100's have been killed since fighting started up again in August. This shows that the MILF insurgency is unfortunately a lot hotter than the NPA insurgency.

This interesting piece shows that although two insurgencies (MILF and NPA) rage across the land, most Filipinos in Manila could pretty much care less. The insurgencies happen in rural areas that are far removed from Manila and don't have any real or important effect on their lives.

The piece also shows how dangerous it is to have some money and live in the Philippines. Kidnapping gangs roam Manila and most of the rich have bodyguards.

I don't have time to go into the dynamics of the MILF insurgency right now. Maybe later. They do have 12,000 men under arms, though.
