On October 20, 30 Senderistas (members of Sendero Luminoso or the Shining Path) invaded a mining site run by the Doe Run Mining Company in Huancavelica and took dynamite, radios, food and medicine.
One of the things that sustained Sendero in its long insurgency was a ready supply of explosives. There is all sorts of dynamite to be had in Peru, a country with a huge mining industry. Most bombs made by Sendero were apparently fashioned from dynamite.
The region is famous for mercury mining. Doe Run is probably involved in copper mining in the region. Sendero has traditionally had a strong presence in this region.
