Yet another incredible video.

This shows an operation in India on an Indian man who is suffering from nasal myiasis, which occurs when flies lay their larvae inside someone's nose when they fly in the nose while the person is sleeping at night.

Facts on the disease:

It is rare in the world, but it is quite common in India, since India is a tropical country. It is a particularly demoralizing condition for a patient to suffer from.

A series in 1992 looked at 13 cases. Atrophy of the nasal turbinates, bloody discharge from the nose, necrotic material in the nose and the presence of maggots was seen in all cases.

Maxillary sinusitis was the major complication, being present in all cases. Diffuse cellulitis was also found in 68.2% of patients.

The 61-70 yr old group had the greatest number of cases at 38.5%.

The treatment involves spraying a turpentine nasal douche into the nose and then removing with maggots by hand with a camera probe with a long tweezers tip.

The fly was identified as chrysomyia bezziana.

Use of a mosquito net is the best prevention. It keeps the fly from flying into your nose and laying eggs while you sleep.
